BYM; Bymøbel for ungdom
Mia Thuv Solhaug og Caroline Schwartz
The aim of the project has been to design an outdoor meeting place for youth outside of leisure activities. BYM is an organic and sculptural bench with three components: concrete beams, pine slats, and steel pipes. The shape is developed to provide youth with various seating options. The purpose is to increase inclusivity and presence of the user group in society. The solution contributes to aesthetic and social sustainability.
Through design strategies, we have gathered ideas from existing solutions, interviews, and material experimentation. Input from youth has been an important factor in the concept development. The bench is based on principles of universal design, with ergonomic backrests. By creating an innovative product, we aim to give back to the youth and Lillestrøm municipality.
Adolescence is about breaking away from parents and teachers. Seeking out new places and people is natural (Hammer, S. B., 2023). A lack of meeting places for youth was made evident by observations. Our design is tailored for youth to spend their free time outdoors together. The importance of the project is reflected in the sustainable development of today's society. We have focused on Sustainable Development Goal 11, based on the urban development plan of Lillestrøm municipality.
